Brand.
Everything is a brand. Think about it? You study in some prestigious college. You carry that brand whole life. Even in politics, say we get rid of symbols, I am not sure if atleast 10% of present politicans get re-elected. Sonia Gandhi is brand owner. Of "Hand" symbol. That's the reason people treat her as goddess. Atleast those who are shareholders of congress company.
Apparel, books, film studios, gadgets, education, politics..everything is about brand. Not that it is bad.

You did not mention the fundamental brands of caste and religion. Even if you get rid of symbols in elections there is nothing stopping people from voting based on these brands.
